Remembering Renee'

The other night I started a new book. I was a few pages into it and I thought 'oh man, I need to email Renee' about this one. She will love it'. As I was thinking that....something didn't feel right about the thought. Then I remembered. Renee' passed away 3 years ago!

The thing is, Renee' wasn't my best friend....nor were we extra close. We met in a moms group. We did spent a lot of time together...in the group. Even went camping together several years in a row. And we each were better friends with others in the group.

But we shared two common interests. Good books..........and Rock & Roll. LOL We were the same age...a bit older than most of the other moms. So we had similar tastes in music. She was a HUGE Bon Jovi fan; I was/am a HUGE Motley Crue fan. And we also loved reading. Similar styles in we loved books that made us laugh.

Most of our friendship was online. She would email me when she would info on Motley Crue, I would email her the newest gossip I found on Bon Jovi. We always emailed each other book recommendations. Many times we had the same "to read" lists. We both LOVED Janet Evanovich books. Even spent a good deal emailing back and forth about the characters.

As the kids got older the moms group gatherings got more sporadic. I still keep in touch with a few of the gals, even though we have all gone in different directions. A few years back I got a phone call that Renee' had cancer. Was in the hospital. We all got together and visited her. Several months later; Renee' died. Once again, many of us got together and attended her memorial.

I am sad that she isn't here anymore. I am sad that I often think to email her a pic of Jon Bon Jovi or a new book title, only to remember she is no longer with us. I am sad I didn't know her better.

4/16/2007: Did you hear the news?

Yesterday was a long day for me. I was up at 4am. Left the house at 5:30am and on my way to a Real Estate Trade Show. Did not return to my home till 7pm.

When I got home, my youngest daughter was watching TV in the kitchen, my husband was watching it in the living room. As I walked through the door, my daughter says "did you hear the news????".

Sadly, I had. Ironically, the featured guest speaker at the conference was a popular local newscaster. I had stepped out of the room when he got up on podium. I was gone briefly but when I returned, his speech was over, and he rushed out. I went to sit in my seat and my mom whispers "did you hear the news?". The newscaster informed the room of the terrible news of the Virginia Tech shootings. SHOCK and GRIEF were apparent on every ones faces.

As life goes, the trade show continued. We attended various classes, connected with others in our field, ate lunch together and visited. But it was still on every ones minds. "Did you hear the news" was a common statement heard throughout the day.

When Columbine happened, I was home. I caught the first 'breaking news' and watching it throughout the entire day and into the next. I was glued to the TV and did little else but watch the footage. I was so connected to it. Same when 9/11 happened. I cried several times and sat in disbelief for both events. I talked on the phone, throughout the day, to others who were home watching it. Or I called and updated those who weren't near televisions.

This tragedy has been different for me. I am still horrified, saddened and upset. But not having "been there" from the beginning, not seeing all the footage as it unfolded has left me a bit detached from it. I don't feel connected to it. Yes, now that I am home; I am watching footage of it. But I don't have that sense of urgency, like I did with the others, to see EVERY PIECE OF FOOTAGE there is.

Please don't misunderstand, I am not saying it is less of a tragedy. But FOR ME, it hasn't been the same. I think it shows how caught up we (me) can get in the news footage of things like this. Now a days, most events like this are shown on every channel, for hours and hours, with different spins, angles, opinions and even falsehoods. We (me) sit for hours glued to the TV...waiting for the next update.

Sometimes I wonder just how beneficial the news footage's, of these events, can really be to the public????? Yet, I will never be the one to turn it off!!!

Regardless, yesterday was a horrible day. I still can't wrap my brain around the fact a person took away THIRTY TWO lives.

HNT: Hands Down

You put your left hand in
You put your left hand out
You put your left hand in
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around
That's what it's all about...

You put your right hand in
You put your right hand out
You put your right hand in
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around
That's what it's all about...

Rules of Chocolate

Rules of Chocolate:

1. If you've got melted chocolate all over your hands,you're eating it too slowly.

2. Chocolate covered raisins, cherries, orange slices, apricots, & strawberries all count as fruit so eat as many as you want.

3. The Problem: How to get two pounds of chocolate home from the store in a hot car? The solution: Eat it all in the parking lot.

4. Diet tip: Eat a chocolate bar before each meal. It will take the edge of your appetite and you'll eat less.

5. A nice box of chocolate can provide your total daily intake of calories in one place. Isn't that handy?

6. If you can't eat all of your chocolate, it will keep in the freezer. But if you can't eat all of your chocolate,what's wrong with you?

7. If I eat an equal amount of dark chocolate and white chocolate, isn't that a balanced diet? Don't they actually counteract each other?

8. Money talks. Chocolate sings.

9. Chocolate has many preservatives. Preservatives make you look younger.

10. If not for chocolate, there would be no need for control top pantyhose. An entire garment industry would be devastated.

11. Q: Why is there no such organization as chocoholics?
A: Because no one wants to quit.

12. Put 'eat chocolate' at the top of your list of things to do today. That way you'll get at least one thing on your list done.

We aren't meant to deal with life alone...where' s the chocolate?

Happy Easter!!!!

Okay, admittedly the "younger" audience might not get this. But I KNOW there are several of you out there that remember SUPER CHICKEN! :-)

And check out this link for some funny Easter Cartoons: http://www.offthemark.com/easter/easter.htm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In my family, Easter isn't a big 'religious' holiday. But we do get together for a big gathering of family and friends. My kids have outgrown the thrill of the Easter Egg Hunt so thankfully I now have a nephew coming into age to enjoy it. So the day will start with his Easter Egg Hunt, followed by lots of food (my fave part) and lots of sitting around, socializing, drinking wine and having a good time (my second fave part). Crossing fingers the weather stays nice to enjoy it outside.
No matter how you celebrate it .... Have a Happy Easter!!!! I'm off to enjoy the good weather and holiday weekend!
HNT: Cousin Itt?
Me...in hiding.
It's Spring Break. Which means my house is overrun with teenagers. NO PRIVACY whatsover. I'm tired of handing out money for pizza, I'm tired of playing chauffer, I'm tired of waking up to random teens sleeping in my living room, I'm tired of having to wear a bra around my house unless I want to scare the kids friends!
And you know? I wouldn't want it any other way! (except for having to wear a bra!)
